Good Friday morning North Stars! Today is an A day. Recess will be outside. We’ve made it to the day before spring break starts. We wish you all a relaxing break and safe travels if you are heading out of town. When we return to school it will be the start of the 4th Quarter. 6th graders, please make a note of your new electives and bring any supplies you may need.
Please check the Lost & Found today before leaving. We have lots of sweatshirts, jackets, water bottles and other odds and ends looking to be claimed.
Don’t forget to fill out the Facilities trivia contest questions today during lunch for a chance to win a $20 Chick Fil A gift card.
7th graders - if you are still interested in the DC trip and you haven’t signed up yet - the deadline is today. Please see Ms. Kenkel or Ms. Wood if you have any questions.
Reminder to 7th and 8th graders, Spring Track begins the Tuesday after Spring Break on April 4th. Get registered online now to avoid a delay in getting cleared to participate.

Book Madness update: this year, you can compete by yourself, or with a partner. This partner can be another student, or a teacher. Remember, if you are interested in competing, please fill out the Flip audition, by April 5th. This can be found on your ELA teacher's Schoology page, or linked in the announcements.
Thank you to all of our students who participated in our trivia questions this week in recognition of the National Drug and Alcohol Facts week. We hoped you learned some more about the dangerous risks associated with vaping and marijuana use. Congratulations to our winners from both Wednesday and Thursday questions: Wednesday winners were Grade 6 Lauren Johnson, Grade 7, Faith McPhaul, and Grade 8 Gavin Hoffman. They knew that any amount of vape can cause damage to your lungs and mouth. Exposure to e-cigarette aerosol can lead to more bacteria in the mouth, which is associated with tooth decay, cavities and gum diseases. Vaping can also lead to a condition called EVALI (e-cigarette, or vaping, product use associated lung injury). Vaping can cause irreversible lung damage and can also make asthma and other existing lung diseases worse.
And our winner’s from Thursday’s question knew that marijuana use can negatively affect your mental health, reaction times and problem-solving abilities. Marijuana use can cause permanent IQ loss of as much as 8 points when people start using it at a young age. These IQ points do not come back, even after quitting marijuana. Marijuana use has also been linked to depression, anxiety, suicide planning and psychotic episodes. And it can also be harmful to athletic performance as it impacts timing, movement and coordination. Thursday winners included Mikie Evitch from Grade 6, Tina D’Antonio from Grade 7 and Dynasty Ambrose from Grade 8. We invite all of the winners to come by Student Services and claim your prize.
Our last trivia question of the week (winners will be announced later today): A chemical in marijuana called ____what_____ affects part of the brain related to concentration, memory and thought?
Happy Birthday: Lem B, Hannah B, Kaylee K

As we continue our National Drug and Alcohol Facts week, we want to congratulate our Monday trivia winners, in Grade 6 Mya Overholser, in Grade 7, CJ Colas Jr and in Grade 8 Parker Scaiffe. Please stop by Student Services to pick up your prize. They knew the answer was YES! Vaping is really addictive. Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine. Some vape product labels do not disclose that they contain nicotine, and some vape liquids marketed as containing 0% nicotine have been found to contain nicotine. A CDC study found that 99% of the e-cigarettes sold in assessed venues in the United States contained nicotine. Nicotine is highly addictive and can harm adolescent brain development, which continues into the early to mid-20s.
Today’s trivia question: How does vaping affect the heart?
